First demonstration of the gatemon: a superconducting transmon qubit where the Josephson junction is replaced by a semiconductor nanowire (InAs) with proximitized superconducting contacts (Al). The junction critical current — and hence qubit frequency — is gate-voltage-tunable, eliminating the need for flux-based tuning and its associated noise sensitivity.

Key Results

  • Qubit frequency tunable via gate voltage (no flux line needed)
  • InAs nanowire with epitaxial Al shell as Josephson element
  • T₁ ~ 5 μs (first device)
  • Established a new qubit family bridging semiconductors and superconductors
