Strong coupling of a single photon to a superconducting qubit using circuit quantum electrodynamics

First experimental realization of strong circuit QED, coupling a Cooper pair box to a superconducting CPW resonator strongly enough to resolve the vacuum-Rabi doublet.

Key Results

• Resonator frequency: 6.04 GHz.
• Vacuum-Rabi splitting: about 11.6 MHz, corresponding to $g/2\pi \approx 5.8$ MHz.
• Cavity loss $\kappa /2\pi =0.8$ MHz and qubit decoherence $\gamma /2\pi =0.7$ MHz, satisfying strong coupling.
