Quantum spin-engineering in on-surface molecular ferrimagnets

Huang et al. used tip-assisted assembly and ESR-STM to create and coherently control an FePc–Fe(C${}_6$H${}_6$) mixed-spin ferrimagnet with a well-separated ground-state doublet.

Key Results

• Realized a correlated mixed-spin $(1/2,1)$ molecular ferrimagnet on MgO/Ag(001).
• Measured a single-molecule spin lifetime up to $T_1=1.6\mu \text{s}$.
• Demonstrated that assembled ferrimagnet units can support ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic intermolecular coupling.
