Hyperfine and optical barium ion qubits

Summary

First demonstration of state preparation, qubit rotation, and high-fidelity readout for ${}^{137}{\text{Ba}}^{+}$ qubits. Implements both an optical qubit on the narrow $6S_{1/2}\to 5D_{5/2}$ transition at 1.76 μm and a ground-state hyperfine qubit on the magnetically insensitive 8 GHz clock transition. Establishes ${}^{137}{\text{Ba}}^{+}$ as a viable trapped-ion qubit candidate with visible-wavelength transitions.
