Summary
First experimental implementation of Shor’s quantum factoring algorithm. Uses a 7-qubit NMR quantum computer based on a custom-synthesized perfluorobutadienyl iron complex molecule with seven spin-1/2 nuclei. Successfully factors 15 = 3 × 5 using room-temperature liquid-state NMR spectroscopy. Dominant errors from decoherence, demonstrating the practical limits of NMR quantum computing while validating Shor’s algorithm experimentally.
