Optical quantum nondemolition measurement of a single rare earth ion qubit

Summary

Demonstrates quantum nondemolition measurement of a single Er³⁺ ion qubit spin state with 94.6% single-shot readout fidelity. Cavity enhancement of the cycling transition enables high-fidelity projective measurement despite the weak oscillator strength of 4f–4f transitions. Demonstrates coherent spin dynamics and quantum jumps from optical pumping.
