Summary

First experimental demonstration of a quantum logic (CNOT) gate using a single trapped ion. Two qubits encoded in the ion’s internal hyperfine states and external motional states. Implemented the Cirac-Zoller gate protocol with three sequential Raman laser pulses at 313 nm. Gate fidelity approximately 90%, limited by motional decoherence. This landmark experiment established trapped ions as a viable platform for quantum computation.
